This unincorporated community is just north of Fort Myers. It’s a mix of rural areas and urban sprawl, spread between the Caloosahatchee River and the Charlotte County line. North Fort Myers’ history dates to the 1870s, when John Powell and his family settled here and founded the now-defunct community of New Prospect.
“It had maybe a population of 1,000 in the 1940s, when I was in high school,” said Glenn Cary, 72. “It didn’t have electricity until after World War II.”
Now, North Fort Myers has about 40,200 people, a 34 percent spike in population since 1990, when it had a 30,000 people.
A drive through North Fort Myers reveals its various facets, from rundown motels and trailer parks to new shopping centers and upscale housing developments.
The 1980s had a graying effect on North Fort Myers. Its median age increased from 43.1 in 1980 to 61 in 1990. By 2000, the average age edged down to 60.2.
The average price of a home in 1990 figures $63,200. Average rent was $378 a month.
North Fort Myers’ boundaries generally extend from the Caloosahatchee River north to the Charlotte County line. The western border is Cape Coral, and the eastern border State Road 31.
Recreation
North Fort Myers has places for recreation, such as North Fort Myers Community Park, Hancock Park and Judd Community Park.
The parks offer opportunities for football, baseball, soccer, basketball, shuffleboard and other activities. The elderly have a senior center. Folks can swim at the North Fort Myers Community Pool or at North Fort Myers High School.
The county has bought 3,000 acres of undeveloped land for preservation in North Fort Myers. The county plans to add three football fields, bleachers and a multi-purpose clubhouse to the Fort Myers Community Park.
The Lee County Civic Center was the main venue in Lee County before TECO Arena. The civic center still is used for various events, such as gun shows, dog shows and arts and craft events.
People can see movies at Merchants Crossing 16 theater at U.S. 41 and Pine Island Road.
North Fort Myers has many places to eat, from major chains like McDonald's and Perkin’s to family owned restaurants, such as Fong’s Chinese Restaurant and Biancas Ristorante Italiano.
North Fort Myers’ main attraction is the the Shell Factory, at the corner of U.S. 41 and Business 41.
Youngsters can have fun learning at the Children’s Science Center or skate at the Palace Roller Rink. For bowlers, there’s All-Star Lanes.
North Fort Myers has several places to shop, including a Wal-Mart, K-mart, Office Depot and a Badcock Home Furnishings. For flea market fans, there’s now a Shoppers Bazaar and a flea market at the North Side Drive-in.
The North Fort Myers Library has been at its present location, 2001 N. Tamiami Trail, since 1980.
An expansion in 1995 doubled its size to just under 9,000 square feet. The library has 64,500 holdings. It has four internet stations. Between Aug. 2000 and July 2001, 151,169 people visited the North Fort Myers Library. Its hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.
The busiest intersection in North Fort Myers is U.S. 41 and Hancock Bridge Parkway. Bayshore Road and Pine Island Road also see plenty of traffic.
The corner of U.S. 41 and Hancock Bridge Parkway had 40 crashes last year, the most in the community. Pine Island Road and U.S. 41 came in second at 36 crashes. The state has plans to widen Bayshore Road east of Slater Road and Business 41 north of Pine Island Road to Littleton Road.
Crime in North Fort Myers rose by 22 percent between 1999 and 2000. Car thefts went up 67 percent. Residential burglaries went up 16 percent. The number of aggravated assaults stayed virtually the same. Robberies dropped by 33 percent. There were three homicides in 1999 and two in 2000.
Most people here get their water and sewer service from either Lee County Utilities or North Fort Myers Utility.
Lee County Utilities has about 15,000 water customers and about 2,800 sewer customers in North Fort Myers.
The average water bill is $19, based on the price of 5,000 gallons. People can call 936-0247 to open an account. New water accounts require a $45 deposit. Sewer accounts require a $65 deposit. People with previous accounts with Lee County Utilities, in which the deposit was refunded, don’t have to pay deposits.
North Fort Myers Utility handles about 13,000 sewer connections and 1,800 water connections. For information, call 543-1005.
Lee County Electric Cooperative provides power to all of North Fort Myers. To connect, call 995-2121 or 1-800-282-1643. Deposits are $150. Those with excellent credit may be exempt. Rates are $79 per 1,000 kilowatt hours. The average house uses between 1,000 and 1,500.
